What is Wellbeing?
Overall wellbeing takes a holistic approach, including physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual components. It’s important to include all areas, as focusing on one will not allow you to achieve complete wellbeing. It’s a learning process, a lifelong commitment.
Physical Wellbeing: This is not just the absence of illness or disease. Physical wellbeing includes behaviours and lifestyle choices that contribute to health and reduce the risk of preventable diseases. It is the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life and to get the most out of daily activities.
Social Wellbeing: The feeling of belonging to a community and a sense of contributing to society.
Emotional Wellbeing: A general feeling of being satisfied with life. Experiencing positive emotions, such as joy, happiness, love and compassion.
Mental Wellbeing: This is the expression of emotional and social wellbeing, and not just the absence of mental illness. It is a state of being able to work creatively and productively, develop potential and build positive relationships with others.
Spiritual Wellbeing: This relates to a sense of purpose and life-meaning. It may include culture, religion, beliefs, values, ethics and community.
